As Pastor of Outreach at Christ Temple City of Refuge in Inkster, Velma is armed with a desire to lift the burdens of the poor, pursue justice for the socially marginalized, and have compassion for all humanity, the life of Velma Jean beautifully demonstrates what one willing, an ordinary woman can do in the hands of an extraordinary God.
Velma Jean is the Executive Director of Operation Refuge Inc which oversees Camp Inspire, S.T.E.M. program, Leaders in Training, Scholarship program, and Mother’s Pantry, the city of Inkster’s only client choice food pantry, which helps over 400 Inkster families each month.
Widowed after 40 years of marriage, this mother of 3 and grandmother of 3 is deeply connected to her family. Because of who she is, Velma has adopted many members in the community as her sons and daughters.
Velma believes that in order to be effective, we have to be in the room where the policies are crafted and ensure those policies reflect the will of the people. After retiring from Ford Motor Company after 30 years of exemplary service, Velma immediately sprung into full-time advocacy and community service.
